Lace up your boots, grab your pack , and hit the trail!
Before I read "Exploring the Appalachian Trail - Hikes in the Virginias", I thought you could only experience the Appalachian Trail on an extended backpacking expedition. Man, was I wrong! Even if you only have a few hours to spare, you can still enjoy hiking on the AT - this book shows you how. One of a series covering the entire trail from Georgia to Maine, this book describes a wide variety of dayhikes in Virginia.

With this book, I've explored many beautiful sections of the trail in that state - including McAfee Knob, Grayson Highlands, and Shenandoah National Park. You can bet that I will continue to use the "Exploring the Appalachian Trail" series in planning future hikes on the AT!

A nostolgic step back in time
I first saw this book in 1981. Twenty years has not change my thoughts on this book. It is one the best pictorial histories ever. The subject is one that is best told with photographs. It was truly a step back in time.

Authors: Tom Bredehoft, Thomas H. Bredehoft, Neila M. Bredehoft, and Thomas A. Bredehoft

a great resource
I was so pleased to find this book. I have collected Hobbs glass for many years and have searched for information. Finally, this book is the only resource devoted entirely to Hobbs. The authors have included well documented facts and information about the glass and its history, along with beautiful photographs. There is a value guide if the collector is interested in pricing or selling their glass. All in all this book is essential and long overdue.

I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills: Stories of Faith and Joy from Appalachia

Author: Nancy Anne Dawe
Average review score:

Captures the workcamp experience with remarkable accuracy
I read Nancy Dawe's book "I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills: Stories of Faith and Joy from Appalachia" with great interest. The author describes with striking accuracy what it is about the workcamp experience that could keep someone returning year after year.

Having been blessed enough to participate in such worktrips myself, I can attest to the absolute truth of her words. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the way worktrips can change lives. This is a must-read for anyone about to embark on their first workcamp adventure, whether it's in Appalachia or not.

Images of the Civil War in West Virginia
Published in Paperback by Quarrier Press (31 July, 2000)
Authors: Terry Lowry and Stan Cohen
Average review score:

Top Shelf Work - Highly detailed
By reading the brief introduction one gains insight into the struggle that Terry Lowry and Stan Cohen endured during their research for this work. Had it not for their intro the reader might have come away believing poor quality reproductions were used in compiling data for this book. Many of the items used in this work were from private collections, some of which were too expensive or not open for publication by the authors. Given the cost of reproduction these days, mirrored with the advanced age of the material used, both authors have come together to put fort an excellent work involving the war in West Virginia.

Even though some of the images are fuzzy the presentation of the material lends itself as a valuable resource for the modern day historian. The book reads well and is actually quite durable for a paperback. It's traveled back and forth from home to Antietam National Battlefield, more specifically Bloody lane, and has stood the test of traversing the fields.
From "Secession" to "Carrying on the Memories" the book flows smoothly through the various transitions of the newly formed state, giving the reader an excellent account of the turmoil of becoming a state. Many actions in regards to statehood via images, sketches and maps are now seen in print for the first time.

With over 450 photographs, drawings, maps and images this book will fill the bill for many West Virginia historians. The authors even note that more material has been unearthed so the possibility remains for a Volume II on West Virginia. As it stands, this is a well-written and researched work on West Virginia and the authors have done a beautiful job in putting the material together in such an interesting manner. Whether you hail from West Virginia or California this book has interesting snippets involving the Civil War for everyone. I highly recommend this book to fellow enthusiasts and civil war Buffs alike.

A singularly impressive tour de force
In The Footsteps Of Stonewall Jackson by Civil War Re-enactor and history buff Clint Johnson is a unique character study of the famous Civil War general Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, one of the most pivotal military strategists and leaders in history. Following the trail of Jackson's life from the church where he was baptized to the museum that holds the stuffed hide of his war horse to the grave of the Confederate officer who ordered the volley that fatally wounded Jackson, In The Footsteps Of Stonewall Jackson is a singularly impressive tour de force as enjoyable for armchair travelers as it is for tourists who want to actively seek out more about this fascinating man's life and the role he played in America's bloodiest conflict.
